Beginners Courses

Want to take up the noble sport of archery? want to challenge yourself, or perhaps compete with others?

If so, then this is the place to start!

This course is designed for persons who, after completing the course, wish to take up membership of an archery club and to progress in the sport, although there is no obligation to do so. However, all archery clubs will insist that inexperienced persons wishing to take up membership in the sport will have attended a Beginners Course as a pre-requisite.

Please note that the minimum age is 10yrs old

An ArcheryGB recognised Beginners Course will teach you how to shoot safely, gain basic archery skills, and give you a general understanding of the sport. Courses are regularly run from March to September each year and are lead by an ArcheryGB registered / qualified club coach supported by senior experienced club archers.

Courses consist of four 2.5-hour lessons and cost £80 for the full 10 hours of tuition. Most people aged 10 and over are able to participate. All equipment is provided by the club, appropriately sized for the individual participant and supplied for the duration of the tuition.

Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult and as archery is a sport that the whole family can participate in, we would encourage parents to join together with their children.

Vouchers are available for a Beginner’s Course, which can make an ideal gift for  Christmas / Birthday / Special Occasions. Vouchers can be redeemed against scheduled events which will be publicised here on the website.

Should you wish to register your interest in attending a Beginners Course with us, or require additional information, please contact our Club Head Coach on the website enquiries form.

Alternatively, you can pre-arrange (via the same email contact) a visit to our club field at The British Ironworks Centre where we would personally provide any further details.

Types of  Bows

On our Beginners course you will be introduced to a Recurve bow which is different to other bows in that the string is in contact with the top and bottom section of the limbs when the bow is strung. The middle section (The Riser) is where the limbs are attached and is where the archer would hold the bow.

These bows are made from a variety of materials and the increasing costs reflects that. A number of gadgets can be added to a Recurve bow to aid shooting, e.g. stabilisers screwed to the front to aid stability, sights to aid arrow aiming, a pressure button to aid the smooth passage of an arrow off the rest. A "clicker" to ensure each arrow is drawn to the same position each time. These bows are very common in Olympic Archery.

The Long Bow

This type of bow is used in Traditional archery along with war-bows, flat bows, and horse bows and have been around for a long, long time. They are made from a variety of materials i.e. fibreglass but primarily of laminated woods very skilfully crafted and can be physically demanding to shoot but great fun!

The Compound Bow

The latest evolution is the compound bow the difference between this and a recurve bow is that the limbs are compressed by the use of "Cams" this helps in reducing the holding weight at the fingers and the arrow is released using a mechanical trigger, arrow speeds are exceptional and extremely accurate.

Increasingly popular and fun to shoot.

The Barebow

Barebow archery strips down the bow to its essentials, removing sights, stabilizers, and other gadgets. The archer relies on their skill, instinct, and consistency to aim and shoot. Barebow archers often use a recurve bow but without the additional aids, providing a pure and traditional form of archery that emphasizes technique and precision. This style is particularly popular in field and 3D archery where versatility and adaptability are key.
